Alfred Burr - Civil War Soldier (31 July 1829 – 1 June 1864)

Alfred Burr was born on July 31, 1929 in Belmont, Ohio.  Alfred married Esther Grimes on January 15, 1853.  Alfred and Esther had five children: Alcinda Jane Burr, Emma L. Burr, John Warren Burr, Clarence Everett Burr and George Alfred Burr.  George Alfred Burr, my husband's great-great grandfather, was born in  September 1863.

The 122nd Regiment, Ohio Infantry was organized at Zanesville, Ohio, on September 30, 1862 to fight in the Civil War . Company "C", was formed on October 3 and  mustered out to Washington, District of Columbia.  Alfred Burr enlisted on October 20, 1863.  He was in Company "C" serving in Sedgwick's (Sixth) Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, under  Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant.   Sadly, he did not survive the war.  Alfred Burr died on June 1, 1864 at Finley Hospital in Washington, DC from shrapnel wounds received on May 6, 1864 in the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia.

The Battle of the Wilderness, fought May 5 – 7, 1864, was the first battle of Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Virginia Overland Campaign against General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War.  According to HistoryNet.com, 102,000 Union soldiers and 61,000 Confederate soldiers were engaged in the battle.  High casualties (18,400 Union soldiers and 11,400 Confederate soldiers) were due to close-quarters fighting in dense woods.  The results of the battle were inconclusive.
